Kim Jong Il je položaj vrhovnega voditelja komunistične Severne Koreje nasledil od svojega očeta in ustanovitelja države Kim Il Sunga, ki je umrl leta 1994. Kim Jong Il je že septembra lani določil Kim Jong Una za svojega naslednika.
