Worldly Savages bio

Worldly Savages is a musical group formed in 2008 in Belgrade, Serbia. Created by Canadian journeyman artist Eric Muth, the band features notable musicians from Serbia, Canada and the United States. The sound of the music falls into the Gypsy Punk genre made popular by bands such as Gogol Bordello and Kultur Shock mixing world music influences with rock music in an exciting and passionate way.

The inspiration for the project comes from singer/songwriter Eric Muth's travel experiences and exploration of his mixed heritage in Central and Eastern Europe in contrast to North American society in which he was raised. The message of the music is critical of Eric's native English-Language North American Culture citing its superficiality and overtly materialist social values which are spreading to other parts of the world through globalization. The music contrasts North American culture with the sincerity and authenticity of the cultures of Eastern Europe and beyond.

Upon moving to Serbia in 2008, Eric began working with notable members of the Belgrade rock scene and organized recording sessions of his songs, drawing on some of the best talent in the Belgrade musical community. Certain instruments and melodies were chosen which add a feel of traditional balkan music to the eclectic rock songs.

The result of the recording sessions in Belgrade held in late 2008 and early 2009 have been included in the groups debut release, the Crazyman E.P. which has been self-released and is availible online and is distributed by Kunaki. http://kunaki.com/sales.asp?PID=PX00ZUIA5H

A video clip for the song Struggling for Character was filmed in Belgrade in February 2009 by director Nebojsa Simeunovic and features footage from the gypsy camps of Belgrade, showing the poverty in which the romany people live in and their often vibrant hapiness in spite of their poverty. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTeuL48xcrc

Throughout the end of 2008 and the year 2009, Worldly Savages has been transformed from a studio project into a live act which features a rotating collective musicians from Belgrade, Toronto, Montreal and New York City, the four cities that Eric has been living in during this time. In Eric's home of Toronto, Canada, the band, drawing members from legendary Canadian Activist Punk band The New Kings, has gained a considerable following putting on balkan themed shows in the basement of 751 Queen St. W. which often transform into wild eastern-european drinking parties when Eric DJs under the name DJ Gypsy Viking.

The group, including a new Ukrainian guitar player from New York City named Dmitri, is scheduled to travel around Western and Central Europe in the months of July and August of 2009 for an introductory tour to gain exposure and spread their music.

First shows in Europe

So, we’ve played two shows in Europe now.

The first show was in a town called Aradac in Serbia, the northern province of Vojvodina which is half Slovak. We had fun there, even though it was raining, the power was going during our set, we invited everyone up on the covered stage and continued playing acoustically. It’s moments like that that make life exciting, when the power goes out and you figure out that you don’t need no stinking microphone to sing for the people, you just sing! The hospitality of this show was the best, we were really taken care of 100%.

The second show was last night in a place called Tovarna Rog in Ljubljana, Slovenia! It’s an old bicycle factory which is now a squat, with a extremely cool concert hall which we rocked. We were uncertain as to whether anyone would show up for our show because there was some band playing similar music also last night, but as it willed, destiny provided a great crowd who were really into our music and really having a blast. Then we got some french canadian friends to play on stage as well, who also rocked the crowd, and then finally I gave the people the dance sound track that they wanted as DJ GYPSY VIKING….

That’s it. Plan a show, go to the place, tell everyone you meet on the street that it will be neat, and then hope for the best, see what sort of event the universe will provide you, but more than anything, don’t worry about it!!!! Enjoy every moment!
